Beyond the headlines mentioned above, some of the more disconcerting results found that over half of those polled agreed that ?a woman can leave a violent relationship if she really wants to? and that a quarter of them feel that domestic violence should not be considered a criminal offense, in certain instances.

?Answers make it clear that more education is needed but?also show a lot of progress. Of those 1,000 men:99% agree that men can make a difference in promoting respectful, non-violent relationships;

• 96% don?t believe it?s acceptable to hurt a woman who withholds sex;
• 95% feel concerned by violence against women and girls;
• 91% say they would intervene if they knew someone was in a violent relationship;
• and 56% say they are more aware of domestic violence issues than five years ago.

Asked?about prevention, most men agreed that speaking out against violence begins in the home.?Most understand their possible role?as change agents,?like educating? their sons and daughters about respectful and healthy relationships. They also see schools, celebrities, athletes and community leaders?as playing?a role in?the messaging.?

The results were released last week in Calgary at ACWS? annual ?Breakfast with the Guys? fundraiser, designed to encourage men and boys to take a stand against domestic violence. The breakfast featured a panel of experts from government, law enforcement, business, sport and social advocacy. The panel agreed that awareness and education are critical. It's pretty old hand technology for higher end all-in-ones, but it's nice to see that technology trickle down to a budget system as well.

The C325 comes with an AMD E-450 processor, integrated DX11 AMD Radeon HD 6320 graphics, 4GB of system memory, a 500GB hard drive, six USB 2.0 ports, and a DVD burner. There are a few optional extras that you may miss, and some that you won't miss at all. For example, even at this price point, unless you're a dorm dwelling student, you won't be too bent out of shape that this SKU doesn't have a HDTV tuner. On the other hand, the system lacks USB 3.0 ports and HDMI ports. The faster USB 3.0 ports are handy for external hard drives, while HDMI can add either multiple monitor support (HDMI-out) or allow you to extend the life of the C325's LCD by using it with a newer PC in the future (HDMI-in). Not a huge deal breaker at this price point, but as they say, you get what you pay for. Speaking of pay, the included McAfee Anti-Virus program only updates for 60 days before you have to pay for a subscription. That's kind of lame, and most PCs should really come with at least a year subscription to Anti-virus updates. The system also comes up a little short in the benchmark tests, as seen below.

The C325 comes with Google Chrome pre-loaded, so that's great for people who want an alternative to Internet Explorer. Other pre-loaded utilities include the usual mix of Lenovo utilities, including Rescue and Recovery, YouCam (for the webcam), and a Driver and Application installer. What's really neat is that you can opt to not install stuff like Microsoft Office 2010 Starter or the Google toolbar. Giving the end user choice is better than pre-installing applications before the system leaves the factory. It saves a lot of cleanup time. You can always choose to install the programs later if you wish.

The faster processor means that it will last longer before it feels "too slow," and the touch screen will help if you decide to upgrade to Windows 8 in the near future. Let's call the Lenovo C325 a close second, and still recommended if you only have $500-600 to spend.

I guess the second point to communication is that you want to encourage each other to be as honest as possible while you are communicating. When I talk about long term, I mean the benefit of a week, two weeks, or three weeks down the track. I learned this the hard way in instances where maybe I wasn?t completely honest with a girl about how I was feeling or what I was thinking. Eventually that negativity started to grow and fester, and it became a little bit of a cancer with our relationship.

The third tip with communication is that once you have communicated, whether it is about a particular issue that you?re having or whether it is about something incredibly positive that you are both experiencing, make sure that you give each other time to process the information. I?ve had to do this when we were having an argument or disagreement about where we were heading and what our values were in a particular relationship. Emotions started to become involved. In those instances, if we were to continue that conversation, those emotions would start to pick up momentum and inevitably affect the way we were interpreting each other?s words.

When you recognize that you are starting to get like that, make sure that you both understand that you need to take some time to step away from the emotion, remove the emotion and process the emotion. Once you have done that, you can then come back and continue the conversation. You will both feel a bit calmer and more rational, which will allow you to be open-minded enough to work through any problems. You shouldn?t avoid any conversations out of fear. Honesty is absolutely necessary in order to keep your relationship healthy.

Plants have long been known as the lungs of the earth, but a new finding has found they may also play a role in electrifying the atmosphere.

Scientists have long-suspected an association between trees and electricity but researchers from Queensland University of Technology (QUT), in Brisbane, Australia, think they may have finally discovered the link.

Dr Rohan Jayaratne and Dr Xuan Ling from QUT's International Laboratory for Air Quality and Health (ILAQH), led by Professor Lidia Morawska, ran experiments in six locations around Brisbane, including the Brisbane Forest Park, Daisy Hill and Mt Coot-tha.

They found the positive and negative ion concentrations in the air were twice as high in heavily wooded areas than in open grassy areas, such as parks.

Dr Jayaratne, who is also a member of QUT's Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation (IHBI), said that natural ions in the air were mainly created by ionisation due to two processes - radiation from the trace gas radon in air and cosmic radiation from space.

Radon is a by-product of the radioactive decay of radium which is present in minute quantities in rocks and is continually exhaled by the ground.

"Because radium is found in rocks and radon is soluble in water, ground water is particularly rich in radon," he said.

"Trees act as radon pumps, bringing the gas to the surface and releasing it to the atmosphere through transpiration - a process where water absorbed by the root system is evaporated into the atmosphere from leaves. This is especially prevalent for trees with deep root systems, such as eucalypts."

The QUT scientists estimated that, in a eucalyptus forest, trees may account for up to 37 per cent of the radon in the air when transpiration rates were highest.

Dr Jayaratne said though there was still a lot more research which needed to be done in relation to the role of ions, the findings, which were published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology, have potentially important implications for the atmosphere, climate and human health.

"Although there is an established link between airborne particles and human health, the role of ions is largely unknown," he said.

"However, we do know that approximately one-half of the particles that we inhale during normal breathing are retained in our respiratory system and it has been shown that charged particles were more likely to be deposited in the lungs than uncharged particles.

"We do not believe that ions are dangerous - the danger comes from the pollutants. If there are no dangerous particles in the air to attach to the ions there is no risk of ill health."

Old Havana restaurants quietly going smoke-free

HAVANA (AP) ? It's a quintessentially Cuban experience: Capping off a meal with a snifter of rum and an aromatic cigar.

This Caribbean nation is renowned around the world for its pungent Cohibas, Montecristos and Romeo y Julietas, but on the island, stogie-lovers are increasingly being told to take it outside.

A number of state-owned restaurants in Havana's picturesque colonial quarter have quietly gone smoke-free indoors in recent weeks as authorities there enforce a 2005 measure that has been almost universally flouted across the country.

The goal is to improve the culinary experience and safeguard the health of both diners and employees, but it's also raising eyebrows among cigar aficionados and cigarette smokers who say the right to light up is part of the tropical country's charm. Already, public smoking bans have spread to cities worldwide, from New York to Beijing.

"No-smoking areas? It's incredible!" said Michael Kuntze, a 59-year-old German day care manager who was savoring a long cigar and sipping rum and cola in the Hotel Conde de Villanueva, home to one of the city's most popular cigar rooms.

Kuntze and six other smokers from Hamburg were on a nine-day tobacco tour, sampling more than three cigars daily and selecting 50 each to bring home.

"That (no-smoking ordinances) is what we have in Europe, in Germany, but we don't want this here," he said, as aromatic smoke rose from the thick ash at the end of his stogie. "This is why we are here. Not to sit inside a small smoking lounge, no. Never."

Officials say the Conde de Villanueva, a favorite of cigar tourists like Kuntze, will continue to let guests and diners smoke.

At least nine state-run restaurants in the small, tourist-packed colonial area of Havana have banned smoking inside since the end of 2011, and more will do so in the near future, said Tannya Sibori, publicity manager for Habaguanex, the state-run business that administers tourist concerns in Old Havana.

Only sealed, air-conditioned dining rooms are affected, and Habaguanex restaurants all still have open-air spaces for smokers. There is no word on a ban for bars or nightclubs, and the owner of one of Havana's private restaurants said he had received no guidance on whether the "paladares" must follow suit.

Habaguanex officials described it as a bottom-up trend rather than an order from on high, but said it's possible there could be an official decree at some point.

"There is a campaign at the world level in which we should also take part, where we are helping to create healthier spaces even for the smokers themselves," Sibori said.

Diners are still welcome to enjoy their after-dinner cigar ? just move to the outside tables, please, where you can people-watch on the quaint, cobblestone plazas and enjoy the balmy, tropical breeze.

"Cuba has an eternal summer, and you can take advantage of the terraces and exterior spaces," Sibori said.

Still, such a thought is anathema to some in Cuba.

The island has an ingrained tobacco culture and is proud of its world-famous cigar industry, which brought in $401 million in sales last year. When other goods were in scarce supply, cigarettes continued for years to be part of islanders' monthly ration books.

Even nonsmokers cherished the subsidized tobacco, which they sold on the black market or traded for other goods.

But Fidel Castro gave up his trademark Cohibas in 1985 on doctors' orders, and authorities have gently discouraged the vice.

Today, state-run radio airs public service announcements about the benefits of quitting, and cigarette packs carry health warnings. Cigarette dispensing machines have disappeared. Authorities began phasing out the tobacco ration in the 1990s and fully eliminated it in 2010.

Castro even joked about the ills of smoking cigars, saying "the best thing to do is give them to your enemy."

Still, government numbers say as many as four of every 10 Cubans smoke ? though that's way down from estimates of 60 to 70 percent in the 1970s.

Cuba has had a resolution on the books since 2005 banning smoking in theaters, stores, buses, taxis, restaurants and other enclosed public areas.

But many are unaware of the law, and it's common to see people brazenly light up practically anywhere they theoretically shouldn't: offices, stairwells, elevators, buses, trains. Farmers rise early to tend their crops with cigars dangling from the lip, and even elderly women meander through crumbling city streets chomping on soggy cigar stubs.

"This is a country of smokers, a country with an important tobacco tradition," Sibori said. "Changing habits that form part of our roots is very difficult. I imagine that little by little things will be implemented so that this takes shape, but I still think there is much work to be done."

The Habaguanex initiative is also being carried out with zero fanfare, and no announcement in state-run media.

On a recent afternoon in El Mercurio cafe, tables were packed with French tourists chowing down on pork loin, rice, beans and fried plantains. Missing was the stale, smoky haze that used to hang over the tables.

Waiters said they appreciate going home at night in clothing that doesn't smell like an ashtray. Chefs take smoke breaks outside the back door without apparent complaint. There's still some clandestine indoor smoking at some places late at night when most clients are gone, however.

"Why not?" said Thomas Gabrisch, a Dusseldorf, Germany, music professor who was puffing on a slender cigarillo outside El Mercurio, when asked if he was OK with the indoor ban. "I think (smoking) bothers a lot of people. For me it would not be a problem ... But I think a lot of people would like to stay inside."

That sentiment was echoed by Dirk Brodersen, one of the aficionados from Hamburg, who said it was an adventure to be able to smoke the previous night at a basement music club.

"What is Cuba? Rum, cigars, sun and people," Brodersen said. "Cuban jazz without a cigar ? not so good."

Olympics to strain UK Internet infrastructure

LONDON (AP) ? As Usain Bolt races down the Olympic track, will London's Internet infrastructure be able to keep up?

Let's hope so.

Experts say the network should be able to cope ? but they warned of sluggishness during peak times and said an unexpected surge could easily push the system over the edge.

British Olympic Association chief executive Andy Hunt has predicted that the 2012 Olympics will be the "Twitter Games," and those responsible for London's network of fiber optic cables, phone masts and Wi-Fi hotspots are bracing for a data deluge as the events get under way.

"There is the potential for a massive hit on the infrastructure," James Blessing of Britain's Internet Service Providers Association said.

Mobile company Vodafone said it also expected a data tsunami, saying "this summer it's going to be the equivalent of England playing in the World Cup final on Christmas Day, every day for the 17 days of the games."

Network engineers face a one-two punch: One is the influx of smartphone-wielding spectators, many eagerly updating their Facebook status from the Olympic Stadium or keeping up with the medal tally on Twitter. The second is unprecedented flow of video being streamed live to the Internet by Britain's national broadcaster, the BBC.

The combination has the potential to snarl Internet traffic. Olympic planners have already told London businesses to prepare for sluggish service during the games or even interruptions "in very severe cases." Data rationing remains an option, even if those involved played down the possibility.

Nationally, one of the biggest contributors to the Internet surge is expected to be the BBC, which plans to provide live coverage from up to 24 locations besides its three main channels of edited content. The broadcaster predicts that the footage, streamed to computers across Britain, will help generate a terabit (1 trillion bits) per second of traffic at peak times ? the equivalent of 1,500 people downloading a feature-length DVD-quality movie every minute.

"It's between five and 10 times their normal output," Blessing said.

He said the unprecedented level of coverage was great news for workers caught behind a desk during the 100-meter dash. But it could be a major headache for an IT staff trying to manage the ADSL2+ connections used by many small businesses in London.

"The problem," Blessing warned, was the potential for "20 people to have 20 live streams on their computers. Twenty live streams at a 1 meg(abits per second) each ? that's your entire broadband capacity wiped out."

At the Olympic Park and other venues, the issue is one of concentration. Tens of thousands of athletes, organizers, media and police will be clamoring to make calls, share scores, file photographs and send footage in real time. The BT Group PLC estimates it will see the some 60 gigabits fired across the Olympic network every second, much of that bouncing back and forth between 94 different venues.

To that end, the company has deployed hundreds of staffers and laid thousands of kilometers (miles) of fiber optic cable ? in many cases "doubling up" so if one cable breaks, the other picks up the load. A purpose-built top-of-the-line Wi-Fi network ? supported by 1,800 access points ? will keep Olympic staff connected on the go.

Howard Dickel, who is in charge of BT's Olympic delivery program, said as many as 25 phone masts are being installed across the 500-acre park, part of what he described as mobile telephone companies' attempt to give the area "the maximum capacity that they can provide given the laws of physics."

Keeping Olympic Park spectators communicating might be tougher task. Organizers expect that at peak times around 250,000 visitors, many toting data-hungry smartphones, will be in and around the venue, which is two-thirds the size of Manhattan's Central Park. They won't have access to the Olympic Wi-Fi network, so squeezing out a celebratory tweet or an Instagram photo might prove a challenge, particularly at the 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium.

Both Dickel and Blessing said outside the park much would depend on how well the British squad performed. If there were no surprises, the system would most likely handle the ebb and flow of extra data with little problem. But if a British athlete went for gold in an obscure sport, or if a pole vaulter failed spectacularly, or if some other world event intervened ? a terror attack, an earthquake, an Icelandic volcano ? then there might be an overload.

Internet service providers have spent the past year and a half bracing themselves. Dickel said BT had brought forward its planned 2.5 billion pound ($4 billion) investment upgrade program.

The chief operating officer of cell phone service provider O2 said his company had devoted 50 million pounds ($79 million) for Olympic-related projects. The Vodafone Group PLC, one of the world's largest mobile phone providers, said it was boosting coverage in public spaces ? such as London's central Hyde Park ? that are expected to see big crowds.

So far officials said they haven't felt the need to impose limits on how much data Londoners can use.

"Hopefully, no one will notice a thing," Blessing said. "We win if no one notices anything."
