Texas Lawyer Blog: Newsmakers: Shannon, Gracey, Ratliff & Miller ...

Paul J. Johnson, a partner in Shannon, Gracey, Ratliff & Miller in Arlington, has been named chairman of the Tarrant County Bar Association Real Estate Section. Johnson was the vice-chair of the section last year.

Johnson says he wanted to be a part of the group?s board because he?s a real estate lawyer, he?s board certified in commercial and residential real estate law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, and he?s interested in how real estate goes in Fort Worth and across Texas.

?I?m involved in real estate law and the community, so it was a natural fit,? he says.

Johnson says he got involved in real estate law after law school. ?In law school, I wanted to do deal work, not necessarily real estate deal work,? he says.

?I came out [of school] in the ?80s, and there was nothing going on in deal work,? Johnson says. ?It evolved into me getting opportunities to work on real estate.?

?I really like it because it?s one of those rare things where you can drive through communities and through the state and see projects you?ve had a part in,? Johnson says. ?It?s kind of fulfilling.?

Johnson says his firm, Shannon Gracey, has two offices in Tarrant County. The office where Johnson practices, located at Texas Rangers ballpark, overlooks the baseball field. Johnson says the development is ?one of the most interesting real estate developments in Tarrant County. Our office is kind of in the middle of that.?

Shannon Gracey also has ?quite a few very good real estate lawyers,? Johnson says. ?We?re active when it comes to real estate.? Johnson says the past chairman of the section was his partner in Shannon Gracey, Blake Hedgecock.

Johnson says the primary purpose of the section is to educate the members by having speakers come in at the section?s bimonthly meetings. He says a speaker discussing the redevelopment of the Trinity River area of downtown Fort Worth spoke during the last meeting.

?We?ll get 40 to 60 members that will attend [the meetings],? Johnson says. ?I hope for the next meeting to bring in someone from the state Legislature to speak about what?s coming up in the legislative session.?

Johnson says his hope is to ?keep folks rotating through and speaking about trends in real estate.?

?The section has an almost completely educational purpose,? he says.
