Android is dominating Apple in smartphone shipments on a global scale.
More than 100 million of the 158 million smartphones shipped worldwide in the second quarter ran on Android, according to the latest data from Canalys, which means Android captured 68.1% of the market.
Apple, the next highest on the list, accounted for just 16.4% of smartphone shipments worldwide. The other operating systems weren't even close.
By comparison, the year before, Android accounted for 47.6% of global smartphone shipments and Apple accounted for 18.9%.
One big factor behind Android's growth is China. China's smartphone shipments increased by a huge 199% year-over-year and 81% of the smartphones that shipped in China last quarter were running Android.
If Apple wants to start chipping away at Android's lead, it's going to have to start ramping up the availability of the iPhone in China.
