NZXT's Cryo E40 laptop cooler sends a pleasant breeze wherever you like

NZXT's Cryo E40 laptop cooler sends a pleasant breeze wherever you like

NZXT is pretty good when it comes to avoiding unnecessary flourishes and providing straight-up PC hardware. Its Cryo E40 laptop cooler is no different, forgoing HDD slots and magic elixirs in favor of two 80mm fans that clasp magnetically to the underside of its steel mesh. These can be plucked off and moved around to suit your lappie's particular hotspots -- so long as you're using a 15-incher or smaller. The E40 rises to 60mm above the surface of your desk, covers an area 420mm wide by 300mm deep, and is powered via a USB cable that can also be shifted to the left or right to suit your ports. The price of all this flexibility? That'd be $28, please, with availability from next month.

Sony on track with its Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0 rollouts for 2011 Xperia smartphones

SONY

Back in March, Sony highlighted some details surrounding their rollout of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for the 2011 line of Xperia smartphones and at the time, their plans looked a little like something like this:

  • Xperia Arc S, Xperia Neo V and Xperia Ray, starting mid-April.
  • Xperia Arc, Xperia Play, Xperia Neo, Xperia Mini, Xperia Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, Xperia Active and SE Live with Walkman, getting ICS "the end of May/early June."

Sony has now taken to their blog to let everyone know the updates, especially for the Xperia Arc S, Xperia Neo V and Xperia Ray are rolling out as planned and they will continue to roll out the updates globally as soon as possible. To further address the matter, Sony has been listing the devices and their carrier related software version numbers so that folks may check to see if their device update has been approved. Although we're sure some folks will still be upset with the wait time, it's nice to see Sony keeping folks in the loop.

Ask AC: Looking for a full-screen agenda widget for the Galaxy Note

Pure Calendar

Chucky1 asks in the Android forums,

I've been looking for a full screen or close to a full screen agenda widget for the Note. Has anyone come across one by chance?

Thanks

There's few things we can all agree on here at Android Central -- listen to a podcast or two and see what I mean. But this, we have covered. We love Pure Calendar widget. It comes with about a million different sizes and configurations (including a full screen version), and themes will make it fit in with any setup you could dream up.

Besides your calendar entries, it will sync tasks with Astrid, Ultimate To-Do List, TaskSync, CalenGoo, DGT Gtd, gTasks, Got To Do, Task Organizer, Due Today, TouchDown, and Pocket Informant. To top it all off, it's scrollable on supported launchers or Ice Cream Sandwich, and the configuration options for syncing and calendar views make it easy on your battery. It's one of the first apps we install on a new phone. It's $1.99 in the Play Store, and there's a link after the break.

Have a question you need answered? (Preferably about Android, but we're flexible.) Hit up our Contact Page to get in touch!

Tribeca 2012: The Revisionaries | Culture Blues

The 2012 Tribeca Film Festival runs from April 18th to April 29th. Jeff Hart and Jeremiah White are there and will be seeing a shitload of movies.

Helmed by first-timer Scott Thurman, The Revisionaries plays like dispatches from the bloody frontline of the culture war. Documenting the once-a-decade meeting of the Texas Board of Education to decide on K-12 text book standards (should alternatives to evolution be discussed? should a passing reference to hip-hop in a social studies text be omitted?), it?s a film whose primary purpose is to make us feel like our entire country is doomed.

Unless you?re a New Earth Creationist that believes man walked with dinosaurs and Noah?s Ark is more than just a cute fable. Or, if you?re a ?lawyer? from Liberty University whose life goal is to breed armies of vacant-eyed Texan children that believe the entire Bible should be adopted as an amendment. If you fit one of those cases then congratulations, The Revisionaries probably plays like a highlight reel.

The Revisionaries is like a 90 minute Daily Show correspondence piece without the snarky reporter there to question the dumb mother fuckers rambling about how we ain?t come from no monkeys. Sure, when cherubic local dentist, creationist, and chairman of the Texas Board of Education Don McLeroy bumbles through a stammering explanation of stasis, Thurman includes a cut-away to a college professor quietly face-palming. But, for the most part, Thurman avoids editorializing through his editing. He doesn?t need to; McLeroy and the other conservative Christians on the BOE are hilarious enough on their own.

Except, it isn?t all that funny that education is being politicized and corrupted by people who rally around the slogan ?we need to stand up to all these experts!? It?s terrifying. The Revisionaries leaves us with a few scant rays of hope, but ultimately there won?t be another text books review until 2020 and, until then, kids in Texas will be learning that John Calvin was a great contributor to Enlightenment thinking.

Documentaries like The Revisionaries often strike me as preaching to the converted. It isn?t like some creationist is going to stumble across this and suddenly realize that his entire way of thinking is detrimental to human progress. However, if you?re like me, a firm believer in trying to keep America from becoming a Mike Judge vision but also really really lazy, then The Revisionaries is just the thing to get you paying at least a little attention to those down ballot elections.

VERDICT:? See it.

Praying to the dinosaurs.

Google, an underdog in Asia, lays plans for Taiwan data center

Taiwan gets Internet traffic easily from the United States. I sits at the ends of undersea cables that extend directly from North America before branching off to other parts of Asia.

Google dominates Internet search engines by such a wide margin in the United States that it?s a verb as well as the corporate name of its Silicon Valley-based creator.

But in China, Google vies with the local, government-approved search engine Baidu ? which means 100 degrees ? and lags South Korea?s local brand Naver. It competes head on against fellow American company Yahoo for searches in Taiwan, splitting traffic roughly 50-50. Yahoo has also held a historic grip on Japan.

So this week, the 14-year-old Google announced that by the end of next year, it would open a data center in Taiwan to improve search speeds and reliability around the region.

Google has already started building data centers in Hong Kong and Singapore. But the larger one in Taiwan comes with government incentives and will boast a specific geographic advantage. That is, Taiwan gets Net traffic easily from the United States, home to Google and the source of numerous Internet search results, as it sits at the ends of undersea cables that extend directly here from North America before branching off to other parts of Asia.

Google will spend a combined $700 million on the three centers, which generally house computers and storage systems that help speed connections and keep them secure.

?More new Internet users are coming online everyday here in Asia than anywhere else in the world,? Google?s Asia Pacific President Daniel Alegre said at a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday at the coastal facility in Taiwan. ?That is why we are building data centers in Asia ??to ensure that our users here have the fastest, most reliable access possible to all of our services, so they can continue putting them to work.?

Google?s Taiwan data center will speed up searches particularly in China, which is just 160 kilometers (100 miles) away but has sought to censor Web searches. Baidu now controls about 75 percent of the searches in China.

?That?s a key, to serve China,? says Marvin Ma, software and services analyst with the market research firm IDC in Taipei. ?China will notice a clear improvement. And this way Google can avoid the censorship problem.?

In 2010, Google shut down its locally based Chinese search engine after a dispute with the communist government over censorship and cyber-attacks, a row that prompted harsh words from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Google won?t give market shares for Asia or estimate the overall number of users in the region. In South Korea, Naver still handles about two-thirds of the Internet searches, analysts estimate. But two years ago, Google and Yahoo signed a search-engine technology deal that has muffled the rivalry in Japan.

Google is also catching up in Taiwan as the ever popular Yahoo retrenches, with reports of layoffs in the pipeline, says Jamie Lin, founding partner with Taipei-based tech investor appWorks Ventures. ?If they don?t make any mistakes, Google is going to be the dominant player in a couple of years,? he says.

Mad Men on Acid

If there was any question about AMC?s hit original series, ?Mad Men?, losing steam after its 500-day hiatus, forget about it! The last two episodes have been awesome. Heck, the whole 5th season has been terrific so far! After last week?s fistfight between Lane and Pete, where Lane kicked Pete?s butt, I didn?t think the series could get any better. But sure enough, it does! The 5th season of AMC TV?s ?Mad men? keeps getting better! Image Credit: FayeVision / Wenn.com. This week?s episode, titled ?Far Away Places?, could have been called ?Mad Men on Acid?, as Roger Sterling and his trophy wife attend an LSD party. Or ?No Mojo at HoJo?s? as Don Draper and his trophy wife visit a Howard Johnson?s and have a tiff. Personally, I thought they should have titled the episode, ?The Revenge of Peggy?s Fella?, as Abe curses Peggy, wishing her a lousy day after she faked sex with him…, again! So the story begins with Peggy and Abe having a tiff and him cursing her to have a bad day. The very day she has her big presentation to Heinz for a new ad campaign to promote their pork and beans. Last time, [...]
