Taylor Lautner Parkour Flick Will Be 'Action Heavy'

'Tracers' will 'really dig into this society,' producer Wyck Godfrey tells MTV News.

When MTV News sat down with "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" producer Wyck Godfrey recently for some expert analysis of the film's chances in taking home golden popcorn at this Sunday's (June 3) MTV Movie Awards, we walked out with insightful Best Kiss category commentary as well as a few good tidbits about his future projects with the franchise's stars Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner.

Pattinson's potential project is in the very early stages, but Lautner's next movie with Godfrey has been greenlit, an action thriller called "Tracers", which Godfrey said will put Lautner's character into the underground world of parkour.

"We've got a great young Spanish director, Daniel Benmayor ... and it's really tackling the subculture of parkour," Godfrey said. "I think we all have seen parkour as action sequences in movies, but we haven't delved into the denizens of that world and what that's about. I kind of think of it as an action-heavy Gus Van Sant movie, because you really dig into this society."

When the film was announced, Lautner's character was employed as a bike messenger, but Godfrey revealed that detail will likely change.

"There's a movie coming out that Joe Gordon-Levitt's doing ['Premium Rush'], and I saw a trailer and thought, 'We should change our guy's job because [Gordon-Levitt] did it so well,' " Godfrey explained. "That's really just a jumping off point in the movie, so it's easy to change."

We then asked whether, before landing the role, Lautner demonstrated proof of his parkour moves — the art of which involves moving quickly through any environment via jumping, rolling and running.

"Honestly, one of the reasons we went to him is that in 'New Moon,' he does that thing where he goes up the tree, and that was something that I was there watching him train every day and realized how extraordinary he was athletically," Godfrey recalled. "He almost doesn't need the wires."

In US economy, Romney finds plenty to bash Obama

Forget abortion and same-sex marriage: Republican Mitt Romney has made a crisp pivot toward the economy, and Friday's dismal jobs numbers are providing the latest anti-Obama fodder to boost his White House bid.

During the bruising primary race, Romney often found himself in open conflict with rivals Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum, who pressed the frontrunner on contentious social issues in an effort to make him appear out of step with core conservative voters.

But ever since he outlasted all Republican contenders to become the presumptive nominee, Romney and his surrogates have zeroed in on what resonates with a broader swathe of Americans: their pocketbooks.

The shift has been dramatic, particularly in the past week, with Team Romney issuing a barrage of Web videos and ads criticizing President Barack Obama's attacks on his rival's record as head of private equity firm Bain Capital.

Republicans have repeatedly stressed that "Obamanomics" have left corporate America skittish and crying out for policies that would remove the uncertainty over tax rates and regulations that weigh down on innovation, investment and ultimately job creation.

Harsh critiques swelled to a crescendo Friday, after the Labor Department announced the US economy added just 69,000 jobs in May, far fewer than expected, and bumping the unemployment rate up to 8.2 percent.

Romney, a multimillionaire former businessman and investor, called the figures "devastating," part of a "cascade" of economic woes.

"Slowing GDP growth, plunging consumer confidence, an increase in unemployment claims, and now another dismal jobs report all stand as a harsh indictment of the president's handling of the economy," he said.

"It is now clear to everyone that President Obama's policies have failed to achieve their goals and that the Obama economy is crushing America's middle class."

Obama hit back, insisting financial troubles across the Atlantic were partly to blame.

"We've had a crisis in Europe's economy that is having an impact worldwide and it's starting to cast a shadow on our own as well," he told supporters in Golden Valley, Minnesota.

Romney, locked in an increasingly tight race with the president, was having none of it.

"This has been going on for a lot longer than just the crisis of the euro," he told CNBC television.

"This (US) crisis has been going on for 40 months. And unfortunately, you've had a president that's been more focused on his perspective of his historical legislative achievements than on getting people back to work," he said, referring to Obama ramming his signature health care reform through Congress.

Top Republicans eagerly piled on, with House Majority Leader Eric Cantor called the jobs figures "pathetic."

"It really cries out for us to actually try something new now," he told reporters.

Cantor and others did what Romney surrogates have done for weeks now: remind voters of Obama's 2009 assessment that if he didn't turn the economy around within his first term, he shouldn't deserve a second.

"Millions of Americans have lost their jobs, are looking for work, and it's time for us to change course and to have real policies that will put Americans back to work," said House Speaker John Boehner as he laid blame for the wobbly recovery squarely on the president.

Boehner also blasted Obama for again hitting the campaign trail rather than buckling down on issues at hand.

"Instead of another campaign speech, the president might want to engage with Democrats and Republicans here on Capitol Hill to handle the big policies that are affecting our economy," a frustrated Boehner said, citing looming tax battles, budget cuts and a $16 trillion national debt.

"Maybe the president ought to get out of the badminton game and get into the rugby game that's right in front of him."

Romney was just as blunt in an interview with CBS News.

Asked what grade he would give Obama, Romney pounced: "Oh, an F, no question."

On the campaign trail, Romney stressed that his business experience would be a game changer enabling him to steady the economic ship more quickly and convincingly than Obama has.

"That kind of fundamental understanding, I think the president is lacking," Romney said.

Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus weighed in on the "extremely troubling" jobs data, saying it proves that Obama's policies aren't working.

"Unlike President Obama, Mitt Romney actually has the experience and the know-how to get our country moving, finally, in the right direction," Priebus said.

However, one terrible start against the Cardinals on May 2 accounts for 60 percent of the earned runs Burnett has allowed all season. Seriously.

He coughed up 12 runs in 2.2 innings versus St. Louis that day and if you remove that ugly outing from his season totals Burnett has a 1.52 ERA and 40/13 K/BB ratio in 47 innings while holding opponents to a .208 batting average.

That one ugly start still happened, of course, so completely ignoring it would be silly, but considering how disappointing he was for the Yankees and how many people wrote him off as washed up Burnett deserves some attention. And the Pirates are looking plenty smart for taking him off the Yankees? hands for pennies on the dollar.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Fabled as a mecca for the health-conscious and fitness-obsessed, California is also one of only a few states that has not hiked its cigarette taxes in the last decade, meaning it is less expensive to light up in Los Angeles and San Francisco than many other places in the country.

The tobacco industry wants to keep it that way.

It has amassed nearly $50 million to kill an initiative before California voters that has been championed by cycling star Lance Armstrong and supported by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who has donated $500,000 to its campaign.

Marlboro-maker Altria Group Inc., RJ Reynolds and other tobacco heavyweights have spent their millions on a media blitz to snuff out Proposition 29, which would slap an additional $1-per-pack tax on cigarettes and other tobacco products to fund cancer research.

If the tax passes, California would still have only the 16th highest tax rate in the nation, at $1.87 per pack. But tobacco companies and their allies say that voter approval of an extra tax on Tuesday's primary ballot in the nation's largest cigarette market would crush owners of small businesses and spark anti-smoking measures elsewhere.

"We all know that Big Tobacco has poured tens of millions in this campaign saying, 'Don't tax us any more,'" said Armstrong, who beat testicular cancer that had spread to his brain and lungs more than a decade ago. "But the fact of the matter is the product they sell leads to about $9 billion a year in health care costs for California. I think if this passes, other states will follow."

Its passage is uncertain.

The Public Policy Institute of California found that support for the initiative dropped from 67 percent in March to 53 percent by late May, reflecting the blizzard of radio and TV ads from the tobacco industry.

A statewide Field Poll released Thursday found that 50 percent of likely voters said they will vote yes on the measure, with 42 percent voting no and 8 percent undecided.

As the primary approaches, Armstrong and other smoking foes, including Bloomberg and Laurene Powell Jobs, the widow of the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs, are pouring in their own money to counter the industry.

Bloomberg has banned smoking in New York City bars and parks during his decade in office.

"California is a particularly important state, and it's very visible on this issue," he said in a telephone interview. "A lot of people there will die unless we do something to stop Big Tobacco."

The $12.2 million anti-smoking groups have raised comes to about one-quarter of the $47 million war chest built by the major tobacco companies.

Smoking is not as common in California, the nation's most populous state, as it is in other pockets of the country. Smoking rates are among the nation's lowest in California, at 12.1 percent, and highest in Kentucky, at 24.8 percent, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found in 2010.

Still, California represents a huge market for the tobacco industry. Smokers in the state bought about 970 million packs of cigarettes ? spending approximately $5.2 billion ? in fiscal year 2010, the most recent year for which national figures are available. Some of that money went to an existing tobacco tax, which sends 25 cents from each pack purchased to fund anti-smoking programs, provide health care services to the poor and fund tobacco-related research.

That helped reduce tobacco sales. In the 15 years after it went into effect in 1988, the industry lost $9.2 billion in pre-tax sales, according to a study by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco's Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education.

Then, in 2006, tobacco companies spent $66 million to defeat a previous measure that would have created an extra $2.60-per-pack tax.

So far, the opposition campaign has centered its messages on the state's budget mess, calling the California Cancer Research Act a folly that will force taxpayers to support a bloated bureaucracy that will send research money out of state. Opponents also have said it could end up raising millions of dollars yet produce little research that develops new cancer treatments.

The nonpartisan California Legislative Analyst's Office says Proposition 29 would generate about $735 million a year in revenue if approved.

Credit is Loosening up for Hotels and Motels | The Marketplace For ...

Hospitality is one of the first industries to tank when the economy slows. It also leads us out of recession as things improve. And just as during most recessions, hotel and motel vacancies soared during the Great Recession. Additionally, revenues per available room (RevPAR) plunged.

The good news is that the hospitality industry is improving and lenders are slowly coming back into the market as vacancy drops and RevPAR steadily increases. According to industry reports, RevPAR has increased over eight percent last year and continues to improve.

Conventional financing is increasing slowly and requires substantial down payments ? 25 to 30 percent. By comparison, U.S. Small Business Administration-backed loans are increasing at a quicker pace and up to 90 percent financing is available.

Increasingly, the equity is coming from wealthy foreigners seeking permanent U.S. resident status under the EB-5 immigration program. Asians and Europeans, for example, are coming to America because of the political and economic conditions in their country. They like the stability of the dollar and also want their children educated in the U.S.

The program requires a minimum investment of $1 million into the U.S. economy. The investment must also create 10 full-time jobs within two years. Only $500,000 is required if the jobs are created in a rural or high-unemployment area.

Most often, SBA financing is sought to finance small hotels and motels when the project costs are below $15 million. Franchised hotel properties received 47.3% of all hotel SBA loans, according to the IFA/BoeFly Franchise Lending Index. It is published by the International Franchise Association and BoeFly, an internet-based marketplace for borrowers, franchisors investors, and lenders. Qualified loan applicants receive multiple offers from among BoeFly?s 2,200 lenders.?

?The credit markets are improving in some sectors more than others,? says David Nayor, BoeFly?s co-president. ?Lenders are seeing market conditions improving and are competing to get quality deals.? Regarding the hospitality industry, he says, lenders ?like franchise brands with a history of success.? Additionally, existing, well-located, non-franchised hotels in strategic urban and resort locations, may also be of interest to BoeFly?s lenders. Borrowers with strong balance sheets and substantial equity are getting deals done.

Nayor says, ?the lenders are still looking for solid balance sheets, seasoned borrowers with industry successes under their belts and profitable properties.? In other words, lenders want to see a track record of cash flow to be assured of the property?s ability to pay the debt service.

SBA?s 7(a) and 504 programs are both suitable for financing hospitality properties. 7(a) loans are limited to $5 million. 504 financing consists of two loans: a conventional first mortgage made by a bank, private lender, or even an individual lender. It is usually 50 percent of the project cost but may be larger if the lender is willing to take more risk, and SBA?s portion is a subordinated debenture ? a junior lien guaranteed by the agency. The debenture is limited to $5 million for hotels.

holiday_inn image Florida First Capital Finance Corporation (FFCFC), for example, recently refinanced the Ocala Holiday Inn and announced a ?$13 million deal.? The $13 million represents total project cost or value, whichever is lower.

So I asked John Hanrahan, FFCFC?s vice president how much of the total project was funded by the first loan and second loan together. ?The total loan amount was $11,609,000,? he said. That represents 89.3 percent funding. (By comparison, a convention loan would likely be $9,750,000, representing 75 percent.)

?The hotel has high visibility from I-75 and the owners have more than a decade?s worth of experience in the lodging operations business,? Hanrahan said. ?This is a strong enterprise with a solid cash flow and just the right candidate for the temporary 504 refinance program.?

Unlike the ?standard? 504 program, the temporary program does not require job creation. Standard 504 requires creation, or retention, of one job for every $65,000 of SBA?s debenture.

SBA financing is suitable for refinancing existing real estate and business loans. A start-up with a solid business plan may also qualify. 7(a) can provide working capital and equipment loans. Business acquisition loans may qualify for buying a successful target company.

Obama to sign renewal of Export-Import Bank

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is set to sign the reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank, the government's vehicle for promoting U.S. export sales.

The bank survived a challenge earlier this month from conservatives in Congress who said it is market-distorting and should be abolished. Without congressional action, the bank's charter would have expired at the end of May.

Obama backed the bank's renewal, saying it plays an important role in helping U.S. businesses create American jobs and sell their products around the world. The White House says the bank supports thousands of U.S. companies.

Obama will sign the reauthorization bill at the White House Wednesday morning.
