Parents held responsible for underage drinking

NEW YORK (AP) ? Parents of teens: If you think a drinking disaster at your kid's party can't happen at your house, not with your kid, because he's a good kid, it's time to wake up and smell the whiskey bottle tossed on your lawn.

Because of the high risk of underage drinking and driving this time of year, many parents open their homes to partying teens as a way to keep them off the roads. What some may not know is that liability laws can leave Mom and Dad vulnerable to lawsuits, fines and even jail time if underage drinking is found to be going on under their roof.

Parents can get in trouble even if they didn't know about the drinking.

That's what a Menlo Park, Calif., father says he is up against.

Bill Burnett, a Stanford University professor, was arrested the night after Thanksgiving over a basement party thrown by his 17-year-old son to celebrate a big high school football win.

Burnett said he and his wife had forbidden alcohol at the party and were upstairs at the time police received a call about possible drinking by minors. In fact, he said, he had twice made his way to the basement to check on the merry-making.

He spent a night in jail and was booked on 44 counts of suspicion of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Each misdemeanor count carries up to a $2,500 fine and nearly a year in jail.

Burnett questioned the deterrent value of laws that hold parents legally responsible even if they didn't know there was alcohol at the party.

"In this case I think arresting a parent isn't going to prevent kids from drinking," he said on the "Today" show.

Eight states have specific "social host" laws that say parents can get in trouble if underage guests are drinking, even if no one gets hurt, according to the National Institutes of Health. (Some of those states allow parents to serve alcohol to their own children in some situations.)

Sixteen other states have laws that hold Mom and Dad legally responsible for underage drinking under certain circumstances ? for example, if a teen who drank at their home got into a car accident, NIH said. In other states, parents can get in trouble under more general liability laws.

Stephen Wallace, a senior adviser at Students Against Destructive Decisions, or SADD, which used to be called Students Against Drunk Driving, said that with an increased awareness of the dangers of underage drinking, law enforcement authorities are increasingly relying on social host liability laws to go after parents.

While he acknowledged that teens are adept at finding ways to drink on the sly, he said he is all for anything that gets at the problem of underage drinking. He said he finds it troubling that the Burnetts said they saw no alcohol consumed at their party.

"Parents need to say to kids, 'You shouldn't be drinking at all and you certainly can't do it here because we can be put in jail,'" Wallace said.

According to SADD research co-sponsored by the insurance company Liberty Mutual, more teens are saying that their parents allow them to go to parties where alcohol is being served ? 41 percent in 2011, compared with 36 percent two years ago. Also, 57 percent of high school students whose parents allow them to drink at home said they prefer to drink elsewhere with their friends, Wallace said.

At some parties, the parents themselves supply the booze. In other cases, the kids bring it, sometimes with the hosts' knowledge.

"Some parents feel helpless," said David Singer of Demarest, N.J., who has 17-year-old twin daughters and a 20-year-old son in college. "Some parents feel they need to look the other way in order to help their kids fit in with the cool crowd. And some parents believe, 'It's better under my roof than who-knows-where.'"

Like Burnett, Singer said he doesn't condone drinking by his underage kids under any circumstances. And yet he found a whiskey bottle in the yard after a party thrown by his son.

Burnett acknowledged he made a mistake but said he doesn't believe police crackdowns like the one at his house do much good.

"All of this is probably going to go underground and result in a more dangerous situation for kids," he told the online news network Patch. "I really don't think it's up to the police to help me parent."

5 of the hottest new Chinese smartphone apps in 2011

5 hot Chinese-made apps in 2011

2011 has been a great year for apps--and that is true in China as well. Here, hundreds of new startups have blossomed, and a good number of them have made some fantastic and good-looking services that are a credit to the iOS and Android platforms. (Of course, some old names got in on the action as well).

And so I thought it'd be a good idea to think back to some of this year's new apps, and find which ones have been rocking the ?free? section of the Chinese version of the iTunes App Store. Then I picked out five striking new apps that I spotted within the top 200.

As a result, I have five Chinese-made apps--all of which I?ve tested out at some point this year; and a couple of which I use daily--complete with a round-up of why they?re so special?

Weixin

Big daddy Tencent has done it again? Launched in January of this year, Tencent?s group-messaging app Weixin is a service like Kik or Talkbox, allowing users to send text, audio, or video clips to each other for free using GPRS or 3G data.

As we saw earlier this month, Weixin has quickly become China?s most popular group-messaging app with 50 million users, pushed forward by the social media giant?s insanely huge social user-base, far outpacing any of its earlier rivals.

Get the app for iOS, Android, WP7, or Symbian via the Weixin minisite.

Youjia

Youjia is part of a newer trend for location-based (LBS) apps - especially from startups--that pinpoint where you are and let you meet fellow users nearby. It?s all very informal and funky, with just pictures, messaging, and approximate distances to help you decide with whom to talk or flirt. There are many similar apps to Youjia such as Mix, Mojing (both for iOS only so far), or Momo for iOS and Android which do the same thing, and 2012 will likely see more contenders.

But for now, Youjia seems to be winning the race, as it?s the highest up in the iTunes App Store chart of any such services--now in 30th place in the free apps list in China and therefore probably garnering the highest number of users.

It?s in the iTunes store or the Android version is available from the Youkia site.

Vida

Vida is a photo-filter app and social network built on the Instagram model. Although it arrived late to the scene, launching this autumn at the TechCrunch Disrupt Beijing conference. It now seems to be the most popular indie photo-sharing app on the Chinese iTunes store, up in the 79th position.

Perhaps part of its success is in its funkiness--especially the minimal and unique UI--as well as how easy it is to browse through other people?s images in a timeline that scrolls along both axis.

Grab it from the iTunes store or the Android version is on the Vida site.

Huofar

Huofar?s app us in 97th place in the store?s list of popular free apps and is something entirely different: It helps users live more healthily. It does this by asking questions about your lifestyle, and gives you practical means to improve your diet using more nutritious food or Chinese medicine. A user can even turn the tables by asking the app to suggest a way to cure an array of common ailments.

In addition to its usefulness, the app is gorgeous, with a suitably ecologically-minded colour scheme.

Get the app from the iTunes store.

Weico

2011 has seen microblogging, known by the generic ?weibo? name in China, explode even further here with Tencent Weibo edging out Sina?s platform to still be the larger of the two with a reported 300 million users. But both Sina?s and Tencent?s own Weibo apps are bland, and just as this has happened with Twitter, some third-party apps have popped up that offer more style, customizations, and funky features.

Weico is the best of these. And although it only supports Sina?s Weibo service, that hasn?t stopped it becoming one of China?s most popular quirky and cute apps, now resting in 158th place in the Chinese version of the iTunes App Store.

Check out the app on the iTunes store or the Android Market.

As new church building rises, Sacred Heart beats stronger

Donations still needed

While the new Sacred Heart Church is expected to open within a month, the church is still praying for help with two important parts of the Catholic Mass. Msgr. Arquimedes Vallejo said donations are still needed to install a new Stations of the Cross and a new ambo, the raised stand where scripture is traditionally read during Mass. Anyone who wishes to help can make donations at the church or send them to 771 Fulton St., Aurora IL 60505.

Updated: December 26, 2011 2:12AM

AURORA ? Every morning, the ladies wander in. Usually three or four show up in the morning, simply to see the work being done: a hole being dug, a window being installed, a pew being screwed down. Witnessing such normally mundane tasks takes on new meaning, when the work appears to be part of a miracle.

It has been 13 years since Aurora?s Sacred Heart Church burned to the ground, accidentally torched by a boy playing with matches.

As the poorest church in the Rockford Diocese, Sacred Heart was struggling and deep in debt before the fire. But while the church lacked financial resources, it has shown to be well-stocked in faith. Families who had been church members for more a century simply refused to give up. Even when the diocese discouraged rebuilding on the site near Fulton and State streets, by refusing to pay for reconstruction. Even when Mass was held in an awkward, smelly basement of the school with exposed pipes directly over the priest?s head. Even when weddings were moved elsewhere and caskets couldn?t get down the winding staircase.

?If you go to other churches, it?s just different,? longtime parishioner Jose Rodriguez said in April. ?I know it?s the same God, but there?s something special here. At other churches, you feel like something?s missing.?

It won?t be long before that something special will include a new church. Rodriguez was one of the dozens who came out in on a Friday morning in April for the groundbreaking that had seemed impossible.

That day, parishioners cried and snapped pictures. The hundreds of folding chairs set out were not nearly enough. Members of the poorest church in the diocese passed collection baskets and sang ?God Bless America.?

The week after that ceremony, construction began on the 8,500-square-foot church with buttressed steel interior and masonry exterior, able to seat 450. From the makeshift seats of the basement church, parishioners can see their new home going up.

?They are very, very, very happy to see the church,? said Msgr. Arquimedes Vallejo, pastor at Sacred Heart. ?The whole community is doing great sacrifices to make this.?

Vallejo said families have cut back on clothes and Christmas gifts so they can donate a little more to the church. When the donated sod and landscaping needed to be planted, 40 men showed up.

?This is one of the poorest churches in money. Regarding their talents, it is very rich,? Vallejo said. ?It is an example for us.?

The new church is a not a replica of the original. But it is built in a more traditional style to keep a connection with the old church. The design is clean and simple, with humble stained glass windows on the sides. The pews and lights have been donated from other churches and refurbished for Sacred Heart.

But, unlike the basement currently in use, the new building will have modern bathrooms, a crying room for people with young children and confessionals. Every day, loyal parishioners regularly peek into the new building to see the progress.

Vallejo expects to hold Mass in the new church in the next month. No doubt, even at twice the seating of the basement church, every seat will be filled with the smiling faces of people whose persistence has been rewarded.

?They are loyal, faithful people. That?s why the people rejoice to see their new church,? Vallejo said. ?For them, it looks like a dream and also a miracle.?

Meera Sriram: Arranged Marriage 101

This article originally appeared on InCultureParent.com, an online magazine centered around culture, language and tradition for parents raising little global citizens. Their mission is to foster greater understanding across cultures through the lens of parenting.

I've realized the term "love marriage" is absent in the West. In India and a few other countries in South Asia, it would denote one of the two possible ways leading to a union, the other being arranged marriage.

Love is probably the last thing on the checklist when two people are arranged to live together for the rest of their lives. Strange but true. Horoscopes, socioeconomic class, faith and geographical priorities are matched before anything else, even physical attributes. All this is enabled by the r?sum? -- a summary of employment, caste, and academic and birth details, including a small pictorial chart of the planetary positions at the "candidate's" birth. Classically, a r?sum? is floated by the partner-seeking family. Most of these procedural steps have replaced the traditional word-of-mouth from olden times and, have almost gone paperless today as with anything else. It was also not uncommon to hire an agent, a marriage-broker, not too long ago; he has now become nearly extinct.

Relatives, friends and neighbors typically play a brief cameo in initiating interest in a particular family. Photographs are exchanged as the last piece of the jigsaw. If that doesn't get vetoed, then comes the next phase: communication. All along, the shortlisted candidates and their families are researched and background-checked. The final stage is the rendezvous. This is a significant milestone. Families meet, usually at the girl's home, for snacks and beverage. Certain food items are typically served on this occasion. Another interesting detail is that traditionally, a girl would be expected to display a talent (usually sing, dance or play an instrument) to win the hearts of the visiting bachelor and his people. This, I guarantee, is obsolete now.

At this stage, with both parties meeting for the first time at the girl's house, things get creative. The permutations of scenarios could be plenty. In some cases, the boy and the girl would step aside, to a different room in the house for a quick or lengthy chat. Sometimes they may go for a drive and come back with a decision. The parents then take things further. Sometimes, if the boy was living abroad, situations could transpire even in his absence. And sometimes if the families are head over heels with each other, it could culminate in an engagement right then and there.

My own case was atypical. After all the paperwork was done, my family agreed to send me on what might be termed a blind date, with my then prospective-husband. He had requested this, so we could save some drama in something that might not have a future. My family was sold on this idea. My in-laws met me for the first time much later, even as the engagement plans were underway. This sequence of events is a rarity. Three months later we had a wedding.

Nowadays, finding a partner online with parental consent and promptly handing it over to them at an appropriate point is within tolerable limits of the concept. Scanning classifieds of newspapers and magazines is also a common trend. Parents are also increasingly on marriage websites. In some rare cases, the couple might not even see each other in the flesh until the altar. Although in recent times, they have the luxury of wrapping themselves around everything electronic to bridge the physical separation. So you see, the scenarios to arrange a marriage are endless. As long as there is no courtship or dating prior to being engaged, it is labeled "arranged".

One common misconception is that the bride and groom have no choice or say. An arranged marriage is not a forced marriage. The boy or the girl could stall or walk away at any stage of the proceedings (of course with justification). Parents might have been very pushy a few decades ago, but in most cases, parents are understanding and carry a wish-list put together by their son or daughter before they set out to hunt. Men and women could meet multiple individuals before they settle. It is not time-bound either. Also, this process refers to adults to be married; child marriages, although not eradicated, are less prevalent in modern India, and again, are not to be confused with arranged marriages.

While it might still seem weird, unconvincing and irrational even with the modern forms, an arranged marriage is perhaps only as wild and whimsical as love at first sight. I am sure even as you read (and as I write) it's very easy to come up with a long list of flaws. But in its defense, it is time-tested and pragmatic. It stems from the belief that all factors conducive for love to develop between the two individuals have been addressed. Advocates of arranged marriages might argue that the chances for infatuation taking over rationale in picking a partner are minimized and that parents who look out for their children all their lives cannot do harm or go wrong. As for the excitement factor that might seemingly be missing in these marriages, leapfrogging and moving in with a stranger should pump enough adrenaline. In my case, I moved to a new life in the U.S. to join my husband immediately after our marriage.

Yes, this could pose sufficient potential for disaster. But doesn't finding a partner oneself come with risks as well? Aren't we taking chances in a relationship when we believe it is more than a crush or when we rely on our instincts? Either way, ultimately the stars have to line up. With any marriage, there is hard work to be done. Customizing and sorting through the hand-picked peripheral issues probably counterbalances the gamble of not knowing the individual very well. And the standard of commitment in a marriage set by Indian society, nurtures the institution in spite of the incompatibilities. Still, there is no dearth of marriages that have been meticulously arranged only to crumble beyond repair.

The practice of arranged marriages is tightly integrated into the cultural and traditional fabric of life in India, and it seems to thrive. I would guess its success rate might not be the same if randomly plugged into a different culture or if experimented with in isolation. But even in India, rebels of arranged marriage are growing. The influence of the West is powerful; parents are more open to unconventional ways, and divorce rates are on the rise. It will be interesting to watch how the centuries-old custom will defend itself; how long will it be sustained? Or will the newfound appreciation for anything vintage tempt the West to experiment--can mom play matchmaker? Maybe the two constantly evolving trends will meet each other midway for one universal protocol for matrimony.

I have welcomed a horde of questions on this subject since moving to the West more than a decade ago. I have also accommodated a gamut of reactions from sympathy to shock on sharing my personal story. Sometimes people are pleasantly surprised to know that I have been happily married for 12 years. However, in this article, I did not intend to prove that arranged marriages yield a better outcome or to suggest that other ways of the world are inferior. I simply wanted to rectify misconceptions and demystify this practice from my culture.

2012 crystal ball: Betting odds for Jon Jones if he moves to heavyweight

2012 crystal ball: Betting odds for Jon Jones if he moves to heavyweight

Jon Jones still has much to accomplish at light heavyweight, but as 2012 moves along there could be more and more talk of the 6-foot-4, 24-year-old seeking fights outside the division.

It's very unlikely to happen in 2012, but what if Jones moved to heavyweight?

Adam Hill penned a thought provoking piece for ESPN.com (premium access required). Hill spoke with Las Vegas and off-shore oddsmakers to ask what the odds would be if Jones locked horns with any of the top five heavyweights in the world.

The guys who set the numbers were split on their opinion of a Jones move up. Rob Akers, who used to set the numbers for the Venetian Sports Book, agreed with off-shore bookmaker Bovado (formerly Bodogsports.net) and said Jones would be a sizable dog against the top big boys in the world (featured odds in the graphic).

Bovada's expert Kevin Bradley makes UFC heavyweight champ the biggest favorite against Jones.

"Junior dos Santos' striking power makes him a significant favorite against Jones here," said Bovada sports book manager Kevin Bradley. "In order for Jones to have a shot at winning, he would have to take him to the ground, basically eliminating his boxing from the equation. Unfortunately, for Jones all fights start standing up and Dos Santos has an 85 percent takedown defense."

2012 crystal ball: Betting odds for Jon Jones if he moves to heavyweightLouis D'Andrilli, who sets the odds at Cantor Gaming (runs the books at The Venetian, The Hard Rock, M Resort, The Tropicana, and in the future The Palms) in Las Vegas, completely disagrees with Akers and Bradley. He says Jones would be a small favorite against the heavyweights. I don't believe that would be the case, but I'm a lot closer to siding with D'Andrilli.

Jones walks around at 225. His older brother Arthur, a defensive lineman with the Baltimore Ravens, is 6-3, 313. His younger brother, Chandler is a 6-5, 251-pound defensive lineman at Syracuse.

Jon's build is different than his brothers because he lacks bulk on his legs, but there's little doubt that he could pack on some extra muscle and walk into a heavyweight fight at 235. If he retained most of his athleticism and speed, is Jones really at a disadvantage against a 240-pound JDS or 244-pound Cain Velasquez (he was overweight for his last fight)? Jones is pictured next to the former UFC champ Velasquez. Does he look that much smaller?

This isn't about what I think or what Akers, Bradley and D'Andrilli this of Jones' actual shot to win these fights. The number is set to pull in two-way action. Once the public saw Jones carrying 235 pounds very easily, momentum would build that he has a good shot against the heavyweights. Therefore, money would come in on the smaller, more athletic fighter.

Looking for another light heavyweight who made the jump? We already have the test case in Randy Couture. Sure, the heavyweight division is better now than it's ever been, but the 220-pound Couture more than held his own against the heavyweights he faced from 2007-2009. Couture never appeared to be at a strength disadvantage against Tim Sylvia (263), Gabriel Gonzaga (252), Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (231) or? Lesnar (265).

Lesnar might be the toughest nut to crack for Jones. The former WWE star is super athletic and would likely outweigh Jones by 40 pounds. Would a gameplan of staying outside and trying to pick apart Lesnar be enough for Jones? Possibly, but if Lesnar ever got Jones in the clinch, it's hard imagine the lanky fighter staying on his feet.

Let's give it some time. Jones could have some very tough tests to? get through at 205 with Rashad Evans, Phil Davis, Dan Henderson, and possibly Muhammed Lawal down the road. All four have excellent wrestling backgrounds. Evans, Henderson and Lawal have big power too. No one here is saying that he destroys all four of those fighters, but if he does, the giants of MMA will welcome a Jones climb into the heavyweight division. So will fight fans.

First freely elected Tunisian govt sworn in (AP)

TUNIS, Tunisia ? Tunisia's first freely elected government has been sworn in following a popular uprising earlier this year.

The new government led by moderate Islamist party Ennahda received a vote of confidence in parliament Friday and was sworn in Saturday.

Tunisia threw off decades of authoritarian rule in January and held widely praised elections, but Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali warned the country faces many challenges: high unemployment, pockets of unrest and a stagnating economy.

Tunisia's democratic transition is being closely watched since its revolt led to a rash of similar uprisings across the Arab world.

Its new government is still only temporary, running the country until a new constitution is written and another round of elections held.

BC-FBN--Eliminated Eagles, 1st Ld-Writethru,610Eagles blew many chances this seasonAP Photo SLS117, PAAB103, CBS132, SLS105Eds: Updates. With AP Photos.By ROB MAADDIAP Pro Football Writer

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? For all those super expectations, all the preseason hype, all the big-name additions, the Philadelphia Eagles are left to ponder all that went wrong.

Despite their late-season surge ? a three-game winning streak ? the Eagles (7-8) aren't going to the playoffs. That's the reality for this Dream Team.

So before they begin looking ahead to next season, they're thinking about the 'what ifs?' One play could be the difference in several of the losses, especially because the Eagles blew five fourth-quarter leads.

"If we would have gotten into the playoffs, I feel we would have definitely done some damage," quarterback Michael Vick said after Saturday's 20-7 win at Dallas. "It's unfortunate that we didn't and that's the game of football. If you make some mistakes early and you get behind in the count in the win/loss column, you sell yourself short in the end and you're in the position that we are in. We're just happy that we are finishing strong. We have one more game to play and we're going to give it everything we've got."

Vick and his teammates wasted an opportunity to repeat as division champions in a mediocre NFC East that will crown a champion ? either the Cowboys or New York Giants ? with no more than nine wins.

The Eagles entered Saturday at 6-8 and still had a chance to win the division, but were eliminated when the Giants beat the New York Jets, rendering their game at Dallas meaningless.

"I've watched this team grow as the weeks have went on," Vick said. "The last three or four weeks, we've come together as a team. It's a family environment, a family atmosphere and that translates to winning. That's why you see a different team. I think we are well put together and well fit. We're playing together and that's what it's all about. But it takes time to build that chemistry, build that unity, that togetherness. Doing it now, it's exciting for me and there's not a place that I'd rather be each and every day."

When the Eagles went on a spending spree and brought in Nnamdi Asomugha, Jason Babin, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Cullen Jenkins, Steve Smith, Ronnie Brown and Vince Young to join a roster that already had a talented core of star players, expectations were elevated to perhaps unrealistic levels.

Even management declared this an all-or-nothing season in which nothing less than a Super Bowl victory would be considered a success. Now the Eagles are looking back and wondering how much they really needed those offseason minicamps and a full training camp.

"We are finishing strong, and are showing the fans and everybody else what the true Eagles could have been, what we could have been doing at the beginning of the season," Rodgers-Cromartie said. "It just took a while to get there. We take that into the offseason and don't look back."

It seemed the Eagles could be headed for major changes when they were 4-8. Fans wanted coach Andy Reid fired and it appeared offensive-line-coach-turned-defensive-coordinator Juan Castillo would lose his job.

But a strong finish could keep this coaching staff together for at least another season. Reid is missing the playoffs for just the fourth time in 13 years, so this is new territory for many of his players.

"This is an unfamiliar feeling, an unfamiliar sight," wide receiver DeSean Jackson said. "I've never really witnessed this. It's a reality check. Look in the mirror. Everybody has to check themselves. Hopefully, we can finish strong and come back in the offseason or next year, whenever we are all together, and really eliminate all the mistakes we had early on."

eFax (for Android)

One would think that e-mail, FTP, instant messaging, and other methods of transferring files would have killed the fax machine, but the antiquated tool is still alive and kicking, especially in the business sector. Fortunately, you no longer need a dedicated fax machine (and the associated phone line and ink) to send and receive paperwork. eFax (Various prices 4 stars), an Internet-based fax service available in over 3,500 cities and 46 countries worldwide, gives you a real fax number that you can use to send and receive faxes?using your smartphone. The electronic faxing service's new Android app keeps most of the desktop version's functionality by letting the business-minded send messages from their Google-powered smartphones. ?You may not be able to apply digital signatures as you can with the desktop version, but it's a competent and capable business-friendly mobile app.

Simple Setup
eFax' Android app has a simple set up process for those who are new to the service. You simply input your name, email address, area code, phone number, check the Customer Agreement box, and tap Start Faxing. I inputted it into the app so that I could log in after receiving the fax number and pin in an email. I then arrived at the home screen that featured four main sections: "View Inbox," "View Folders," "Search Faxes," and "Send A Fax." Each section's function is self-explanatory. Naturally, existing eFax users can simply log in with their credentials.

Cost
There are three different types of eFax accounts: Free, Plus, and Pro. The free account lets you receive (not send) just 10 faxes per month, so it's a good match for those who very rarely fax. Next up the ladder is eFax Plus ($16.95 per month), which includes 150 pages of incoming and outbound faxes, and a 15-cent per page coverage fee (there's also a $10 one-time set up charge). eFax also offers a Pro model ($19.95 per month, $220 per year) designed for large businesses and individuals with heavy faxing needs. There's a $19.95 one-time set up fee, but with the higher cost comes 200 pages of incoming faxes and a cool voicemail feature that sends left messages to your inbox. There's also a 10-cent per page overage charge, which is five cents cheaper than the basic plan.

The Plus and Pro accounts are relatively expensive compared to Send2Fax' Home Office and Small Business plans which are $8.95 per month and $12.95 per month, respectively. MyFax has three plans, one of which starts of $10 per month for 100 faxes sent and 200 received.

The eFax Experience
Firing off a fax required that I tap "Send A Fax," key a phone number into the address field, and optionally fill in cover letter information. At the moment, eFax for Android only allows you to send photos snapped with the phone's camera or stored within the image gallery?no other file types. So, if you want to send a document, you'd have to shoot it with your phone's camera and then send it (which is what I did to test the service). You can, however, use eFax' email-to-fax capabilities (outside of the mobile app) to send files of any type.

The recipient contacted me stating that he received the fax five minutes after it was sent. When he responded with a fax of his own, it arrived in my inbox seven minutes later?not bad considering the money I saved on a dedicated machine, ink, and paper. Faxes can be tagged and archived, or forwarded as faxes or email messages, but you can?t add digital signatures as you can with the desktop version. Note: Fax quality may vary depending on your phone's camera.

Should You Subscribe to eFax?
eFax for Android works because it makes the fax process simple?you don't need to own a machine or visit Kinkos. All that's needed is a Web connection, which means you can fax from nearly any location. eFax for Android may only let you fax photos , and it doesn't support digital signatures, but there's an extremely high convenience factor. All in all, eFax is a solid companion for the for business customers who want to save on paper and ink.

It's the World's First Gaming Laptop Delay

It's the World's First Gaming Laptop DelayOriginally slated for release before Christmas, Razer's ambitious Blade gaming laptop has run into supply issues pushing shipping back to mid to late January. Don't cry, they're throwing in a free gaming mouse. You can't cry when there's a free mouse involved.

In a comment posted on Razer's Facebook page earlier this week, company CEO Min-Liang Tan apologized for the unexpected delay of the Razer Blade, apparently caused by a smaller-than-expected supply if the 256GB solid state drives the $2799.99 gaming laptop were recently been upgraded with (the system was originally configured with a 320GB SATA drive). While Razer didn't add to the price of the machine to reflect the $300-$500 price of the new drives, it looks like customers will instead be paying in time.

We worked really hard to have the Razer Blade ready for launch and it was a painful decision for us to delay this till after Christmas but we decided the upgrade from the HDD to the SSD drive was just something we wanted to have as gamers ourselves.

It's the World's First Gaming Laptop DelayWe apologize to all those of you who have been eagerly looking forward to getting a Razer Blade for yourself for Christmas and we're truly sorry for disappointing you.

To show how sorry they truly are, folks that head to the product page for the Blade and click the "Notify Me" button will score a free Razer Orochi Blade Edition gaming mouse for their trouble. Decked out in black and green, the mouse was originally planned to be an accessory marketing with the laptop; well now it's included.

Hopefully we'll be able to get our hands on one of these babies somewhere around launch time so we can let you know how well $2,800 of laser-focused gaming laptop works out.

HTC to remove feature that infringes Apple patent

HTC, Asia's second-biggest maker of smart phones, can tweak the technology in its handsets to avoid a U.S. trade agency ban. Dealing with the threat from Apple's and Samsung Electronics' new devices may prove tougher.

The U.S. International Trade Commission said Monday that, beginning in April, it would ban the sale of HTC phones that infringed an Apple patent on so-called data detection, such as touching a phone number or an address in an e-mail to dial or find the address on a map. HTC responded by saying it will remove the offending features from its phones.

Keeping the handsets on the market solves HTC's immediate challenge after becoming the top selling vendor in the United States. Samsung's Galaxy Nexus and Apple's faster, Siri-enabled iPhone hit the market within the past quarter, posing a new threat to HTC's place in the $262 billion global mobile-phone market. The Taiwanese company is forecast to post its slowest annual sales growth and first profit decline since the 2009 economic crisis.

"Things were going great at HTC two years ago, their products were so successful, and they were the hottest company in mobile phones," said Will Stofega, an analyst at researcher IDC. "They didn't keep the momentum going, and now we're seeing products that haven't wowed audiences as much."

HTC's revenue will climb 11 percent next year and profit will drop 6.7 percent, according to analysts' estimates compiled by Bloomberg, marking its worst financial performance since the 2009 global economic crisis. HTC's revenue climbed fiftyfold from 2000 to 2010, according to Bloomberg data.

Last month, stiff competition prompted HTC to cut its sales guidance for this quarter by 20 percent. That announcement, on Nov. 23, prompted the stock to drop by its daily 7 percent limit in Taipei for two consecutive days, worsening the year-to-date loss to 45 percent.

At least six brokers downgraded HTC since the revised guidance, with more analysts recommending investors sell HTC than buy for the first time in at least two years.

The ITC, the agency empowered to block imports of products that infringe the patents, found in Apple's favor for one of four patents the Cupertino company alleged HTC breached. Apple's patent covered a feature in which the phone recognizes a telephone number so it can be stored in directories or called without dialing.

The result, while less than Apple sought, marks its first victory in patent cases and strengthens the argument that Google's Android "ripped off the iPhone," as the company's late founder, Steve Jobs, once claimed. The ruling is the first definitive decision in the dozens of patent cases that began to proliferate last year as smart-phone makers battle over a market that Strategy Analytics Inc. said increased 44 percent last quarter from a year earlier to 117 million phones worldwide.

Apple also has civil patent infringement cases against HTC and Samsung. Both Asian rivals have also filed their own retaliatory actions to the ITC and in U.S courts. The Android operating system has led the global market since last year, climbing to 48 percent of all smart phones in the second quarter of this year and ahead of 19 percent for Apple's iOS platform, according to British researcher Canalys.

Future of casinos in Florida may come down to jobs

(AP)? MIAMI ? Sun-drenched Miami has beaches, South Beach nightspots, a new stadium for the Miami Marlins and athletic superstars like LeBron James.

But nearly 300,000 people there are out of work after hard hits from the recession and the collapse of Florida's real estate market.

Now, some big-money backers are touting a new attraction that promises to boost jobs: Casinos.

They argue Miami can become a shimmering East Coast version of Las Vegas, generating a spark for the state's stalled economy. Miami's selling points, they argue, could help the area transform itself into a serious rival to Vegas.

Malaysia-based Genting Group, which runs a massive casino in Singapore, is so sure about the possibility that it has already spent nearly a half-billion dollars to acquire property in downtown Miami. The group has ambitious plan to alter the Miami skyline with a sprawling $3.8 billion complex designed to look like coral.

That sounds good to people like Michael Ferrarelli, who right now just has a part-time job at the Miami Dolphins stadium.

"With the economy the way it is and so many people out of work right now, it's the best way to boost the economy," Ferrarelli said. "You're going to bring thousands of jobs into each location."

The serious amount of money already spent by Genting has sparked the interest of other Las Vegas casino operators, not to mention those who already own sports facilities in South Florida.

This new vision for Miami, however, will require approval from the Republican-led Legislature and Gov. Rick Scott. Casino backers have already begun a full-tilt lobbying effort and it appears the debate over gambling will be one of the biggest issues lawmakers deal with during the session that starts next month.

It would be tempting to think lawmakers are eager to go along, as Florida grapples with a 10.3 percent unemployment rate.

But that's not the case.

The initial bill filed by two South Florida legislators' calls for each company wanting a casino to spend a minimum of $2 billion. It has won the backing of builders and contractors as well as one of the state's big business lobbying outfits.

But a diverse coalition? ranging from Disney World, the Florida Chamber of Commerce and existing dog and horse track owners worried about their future ? want lawmakers to reject the concept.

They contend such a massive proposal will harm the businesses already here because the promises of luring thousands of tourists from across the country and world won't pan out. They point to Nevada's struggling economy as proof that gambling is not what's needed to turn around the state.

"The reason these billion dollar casinos want to leave Atlantic City and Las Vegas is that they know Florida is growing," said Mark Wilson, president of the Florida Chamber. "It would be a fundamental mistake for us to fall for that bet."

Floridians already spend a lot on gambling. The state-controlled lottery racked up more than $4 billion in sales during the last fiscal year and state economists say the existing pari-mutuels and Indian gaming generate another $3 billion.

Genting officials contend that adding three new mega-casinos could generate anywhere from $4.5 billion to $7 billion more, double what is happening in the state now.

Colin Au, head of Genting Americas, stood recently before a state Senate committee and made elaborate promises to back that figure up. He said his company would make sure to lure travelers from as far away as Asia by guaranteeing to purchase half the seats on nonstop flights across the Pacific. He tried to assuage fears that his resort would compete with Disney World by saying his hotel would sell tens of thousands of tickets to the theme park.

Au also disputed claims his resort would harm existing restaurants and hotels.

"We are spreading the cake all over the place," Au said.

But this optimistic take on casinos isn't shared by some who follow the gambling industry.

Janet Brashear, a Wall Street analyst, has concluded that South Florida casinos could succeed in attracting tourists, possibly to the detriment of both Atlantic City and Las Vegas.

But Brashear, of Bernstein Research, doubts that the state can support what is now envisioned. She warns that Florida is a not a "clean slate" and that it would have to become larger than Las Vegas to support a return on the level of investment mandated by the legislation.

The level of opposition that has mounted against the casino proposal so far may doom it this year.

Lawmakers appear split and Scott has avoided taking a direct stance. The governor came into office last January promising to jumpstart the state's economy but so far he has merely stated that he does not want the state budget to be more reliant on gambling revenue.

That's not what's on Ellen Tringali's mind.

To her it's still about the jobs.

Standing in line next to Michael Ferrarelli at a recent job fair at a jai-alai that is expanding to include slots and blackjack, the 47-year-old Hollywood resident said she's been looking for work since 2009. She said she took a slot machine repair course because the competition for jobs in her previous field, secretarial work, was too fierce.

"We're hoping," Tringali said. "It seems like the economy the way it is, gaming in South Florida seems to be something that's picking up."

Sony's XBA balanced armature in-ear headphone lineup headed to the US, we go ears-on

We just met with Sony at its New York City store on Madison Ave. in Midtown, and boy did it have some excellent news for in-ear headphone lovers. While sitting down in the PlayStation Lounge, we briefly demoed nearly every piece of its lineup of XBA balanced armature intra-aurals, which if you'll recall, were announced for parts of Asia back in September. While the 11-model lineup, ranging from standard buds to Bluetooth and noise-cancelling sets, is just beginning to hit those regions now, we've been told that folks in the US can expect them to arrive on American shores next year, with official availability details due at CES. The units we checked out are voiced and finished as those set to hit production, but according to Sony, some of the cabling now in place will change before the stateside release. Interested audiophiles and music lovers can click on past the break for the full details, as well as our initial -- and brief -- impressions.

Palm-sized baby among the world's smallest (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? At birth, Melinda Star Guido was so tiny she could fit into the palm of her doctor's hand. Weighing just 9 1/2 ounces ? less than a can of soda ? she is among the smallest babies ever born in the world.

Most infants her size don't survive, but doctors are preparing to send her home by New Year's.

Melinda was born premature at 24 weeks in late August and is believed to be the second-smallest baby to survive in the U.S. and third smallest in the world. She spent the early months cocooned in an incubator in the neonatal intensive care unit in Los Angeles.

Despite hurdles, Melinda lived to her original Thursday due date. Doctors say it is too early to say how she will fare developmentally and physically when she grows up.

For now, her 22-year-old mother sits at her bedside almost every day and stays overnight whenever she can.

On Wednesday, Haydee Ibarra caressed Melinda through the portholes of the incubator where nurses pinned up a homemade sign bearing her name. Now 3 1/2 months old and weighing 4 pounds, Melinda gripped Ibarra's pinky finger and yawned.

"Melinda, Melinda," she cooed at her daughter dressed in a polka dot onesie. "You're awake today."

During her pregnancy, Ibarra suffered from high blood pressure, which can be dangerous for mother and fetus. She was transferred from a hospital near her San Fernando Valley home to the county's flagship hospital, which was better equipped to handle high-risk pregnancies.

There was a problem with the placenta, the organ that nourishes the developing fetus. The fetus, however, was not getting proper nutrition, blood and oxygen. Doctors knew Melinda would weigh less than a pound, but they were surprised at how small and fragile she was.

"The first few weeks, it was touch and go. None of us thought the baby was going to make it," said Dr. Rangasamy Ramanathan, who oversees premature infants at the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center.

Even if she survived, doctors told Ibarra and her husband Yovani Guido, children born this extremely premature can have developmental delays and impairments such as blindness, deafness or cerebral palsy.

Ibarra, who previously had a stillborn, told doctors to do whatever necessary to help her baby.

"They said, `We'll take the chance. Please try.' So we said. `OK we'll try,'" Ramanathan recalled.

Melinda was delivered by cesarean section at 24 weeks and was immediately transferred to the NICU where a team of doctors and nurses kept watch around the clock. Infants born before 37 weeks are considered premature.

Melinda was kept insulated in an incubator and was hooked up to a machine to aid her breathing. She got nutrition through a feeding tube. Her mother said her skin felt like plastic because it was so thin.

"It takes a lot of good care and a lot of good luck. Most of them don't survive," said pediatrician Dr. Edward Bell of the University of Iowa who keeps an online database of the world's smallest surviving babies who were less than a pound at birth.

The list currently contains 126 babies dating back to 1936. Since submission is voluntary, it does not represent all survivors.

Ten babies weighing less than a pound were born last year and survived. Melinda joins three other tiny survivors delivered this year in Berkeley; Seoul, South Korea; and Iowa City, Iowa. All are bigger than Melinda, who is not eligible to be listed until she gets discharged.

Most tiny babies who survive tend to be female. That's because female fetuses mature faster than males of the same gestational age. Having more developed lungs and other vital organs increases odds of survival.

Bell published a study last year that found many survivors struggle with health and learning problems. For those for whom growth data are available, many are short and underweight for their age.

There are some success stories.

The smallest surviving baby born weighing 9.2 ounces is now a healthy 7-year-old and another who weighed 9.9 ounces at birth is an honors college student studying psychology. Their progress was detailed in a study published this week in the journal Pediatrics by doctors at Loyola University Medical Center in Illinois where the girls were born.

In the past three years, Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center cared for two other babies with extremely low birth weight who survived, but Melinda holds the record at the hospital.

Prematurity comes with high costs. Ramanathan estimates it costs $3,000 to $5,000 a day to care for a premature infant.

A month after birth, Melinda was treated for an eye disorder that's common in premature babies. She faced her biggest test last month when she underwent surgery to close an artery that usually seals after birth.

Ybarra held her daughter for the first time after the surgery. Before that, she could only touch her through the incubator.

The next challenge is learning to bottle feed before discharge. Ramanathan predicted at least another two-week stay, dashing her parents' hopes of taking her home by Christmas.

Ramanathan said doctors don't know how Melinda will fare when she's older. Since she did not have major complications such as bleeding in the brain, he held out hope.

Melinda can breathe by herself, but still uses an oxygen tube as a precaution. On Wednesday, an ophthalmologist checked out her eyes and said everything looked good.

After the checkup, Ibarra lifted Melinda out of the incubator and sat in a rocking chair, cradling her.

Military marks end to nearly nine bloody years in Iraq (Reuters)

BAGHDAD (Reuters) ? U.S. forces formally ended almost nine years of war in Iraq on Thursday with a modest flag-lowering ceremony in Baghdad, while to the north flickering violence highlighted ethnic and sectarian strains threatening the country in years ahead.

"After a lot of blood spilled by Iraqis and Americans, the mission of an Iraq that could govern and secure itself has become real," Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said at the ceremony at Baghdad's still heavily-fortified airport.

Almost 4,500 U.S. soldiers and tens of thousands of Iraqis lost their lives in the war that began with a "Shock and Awe" campaign of missiles pounding Baghdad and descended into sectarian strife and a surge in U.S. troop numbers.

U.S. soldiers lowered the flag of American forces in Iraq and slipped it into a camouflage-colored sleeve in a brief outdoor ceremony, symbolically ending the most unpopular U.S. military venture since the Vietnam War of the 1960s and 70s.

The remaining 4,000 American troops will leave by the end of the year.

Toppled Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein is dead, executed in 2006, and the worst sectarian violence has, at least for now, passed. But Iraq still struggles with insurgents, a fragile power-sharing government and an oil-reliant economy plagued by power shortages and corruption.

"Iraq will be tested in the days ahead, by terrorism, by those who would seek to divide, by economic and social issues," Panetta told the rows of assembled U.S. soldiers and embassy officials at the ceremony. "Challenges remain, but the United States will be there to stand by the Iraqi people."

In Falluja, the former heartland of an al Qaeda insurgency that suffered some of the most vicious fighting in the war, several thousand Iraqis celebrated the withdrawal on Wednesday, some burning U.S. flags and waving pictures of dead relatives.

Falluja became more than any other Iraqi city a symbol for the brutality of the war after the 2003 invasion.

Ali al-Falluji's building lies with its ceiling collapsed, debris scattered across a Falluja roadside just as the Iraqi businessman left it in 2004 when U.S. bombs punctured its roof. "This scene must remain like it is as a testimony to the brutality of the Americans," said Falluji.

It took two U.S. incursions into Falluja in 2004, and weeks of devastating house-to-house fighting, to subdue the city.

"I feel how my son Ibrahim grieves. He was injured in his head by a U.S. bullet in April 2004 and it paralyzed him," said Mudhafer Ali, a Falluja retiree. "The Americans have left, but they left us for our sorrow, pains and destroyed the future."

Elsewhere, around 2,500 mainly Shi'ite Muslim residents of the northern territory of Diyala protested in front of the provincial council building for a second day against a move to declare autonomy from mainly Sunni Muslim Salahuddin province.

Police used batons and water cannon to disperse demonstrators who tried to storm the council headquarters, witnesses said. Some protesters climbed to the roof of the building and raised green and black Shi'ite flags.

Some parts of Diyala are territories disputed between the minority Kurds in the north and the Arab, Shi'ite-led government in Baghdad. The long-standing row over land, oil and power could trigger further conflict in Iraq after American troops depart.

Iraq's neighbors will watch how Baghdad tackles its sectarian and ethnic division without the U.S. military. Events there could be influenced by conflict in neighboring Syria that has taken on a sectarian hue in recent weeks.

U.S. President Barack Obama, who made an election promise in 2008 to bring troops home from Iraq, told Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki that Washington will remain a loyal partner after the last troops roll across the Kuwaiti border.

"WE NEED TO BE SAFE"

Iraq's Shi'ite leadership presents the withdrawal as a new start for the country's sovereignty, but many Iraqis question which direction the nation will take without U.S. troops.

"I am happy they are leaving. This is my country and they should leave," said Samer Saad, a soccer coach. "But I am worried because we need to be safe. We are worried because all the militias will start to come back."

Some like Saad fear more sectarian strife or an al Qaeda return to the cities.

Violence has ebbed since the bloodier days of sectarian slaughter when suicide bombers and hit squads claimed hundreds of victims a day at times as the country descended into tit-for-tat killings between the Sunni and Shi'ite communities.

In 2006 alone, 17,800 Iraqi military and civilians were killed in violence.

Iraqi security forces are generally seen as capable of containing the remaining Sunni Islamist insurgency and the rival Shi'ite militias that U.S. officials say are backed by Iran.

But attacks now target local government offices and security forces in an attempt to show the authorities are not in control.

Saddam Hussein's fall opened the way for the Shi'ite majority community to take positions of power after decades of oppression under his Sunni-run Baath party.

Even the power-sharing in Maliki's government is hamstrung, with coalition parties split along sectarian lines, squabbling over laws and government posts.

Sunnis fear they will be marginalized or even face creeping Shi'ite-led authoritarian rule under Maliki. A recent crackdown on former members of the Baath party has fuelled those fears.

Iraq's Shi'ite leadership frets that the crisis in nearby Syria could eventually bring a hardline Sunni leadership to power in Damascus, worsening Iraq's own sectarian tensions.

"WAS IT WORTH IT?"

U.S. troops were supposed to stay on as part of a deal to train the Iraqi armed forces but talks about immunity from prosecution for American soldiers fell apart.

Memories of U.S. abuses, arrests and killings still haunt many Iraqis and the question of legal protection from prosecution looked too sensitive to push through parliament.

At the height of the war, 170,000 American soldiers occupied more than 500 bases across Iraq.

Only around 150 U.S. soldiers will remain after December 31, attached to the huge U.S. Embassy near the Tigris River. Civilian contractors will take on the task of training Iraqi forces on U.S. military hardware.

Every day trucks with troops trundle in convoys across the border into Kuwait.

"Was it worth it? I am sure it was. When we first came in here, the Iraqi people seemed like they were happy to see us," said Sgt 1st Class Lon Bennish, packing up recently at a U.S. base and finishing the last of three deployments in Iraq.

"I hope we are leaving behind a country that says 'Hey, we are better off now than we were before.'"
